Sensing each next step in writing as inquiry

There are issues of pace as I engage in writing as inquiry, seeking to follow the emerging threads. If I am rushing at writing, just that little bit ahead of the rhythm with which it is appearing, I lose connection. This may well be anxiety. ‘I must finish revising this chapter today!’ If I can persuade myself to slow up, or the faltering

writing throws me off and I take the hint and go off to wander for a moment, stretch out my back and return, I can, for a while at least, get into step with the writing, flow with its flow. Then everything I do, going to brew tea, looking out over the blue skied view of Morecambe Bay and the further hills, even popping to the shop for milk, all of that is still writing, still nurturing this diffuse attention inside me that is working on the writing whatever else I am doing. Writing is, then, a whole body, whole person experience. If writing is going well and engaging, I can be quite a fidget when I write, receptively alert. I like to wander off on small errands and come quickly back. Leaving my keyboard does not mean that I have stopped writing, should not be taken as a sign that I am open to conversation. My mind is elsewhere.
